This hand-made pair of earrings leaves the bench in Midyat, a town in Mardin province long identified with worked silver. The openwork is telkâri, a filigree method of soldering spun silver wire into lace-like fields. The vav is the Arabic letter long used as an ornamental motif in Ottoman calligraphy. Remaining questions are best put to the workshop itself.
